STONY POINT AMBULANCE NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

01/02/2013

The Stony Point Volunteer Ambulance Corps (SPAC) is seeking volunteers.  If you have the desire, dedication, interest, and a minimum of twelve (12) hours a month to help your neighbors in their time of need, please consider joining our elite corps.  We offer free training, a beautifully new state-of-the art emergency medical facility, and a supportive group of volunteers, who will help you to become a fully trained emergency medical technician.  We also have an award winning youth squad and an active auxiliary, both integral facets of the Corps.

Happy New Year – Have a Great 2013

12/27/2012

2012 is the 66th year that Stony Point Ambulance Corps was in service to the community. It started in 1946 with  a group of concerned citizens and a postcard mailing to the residents of Stony Point. (read the first annual report from 1947)

After a brief stint using borrowed garage space, the ambulance corps operated out of a location at 6 Lee Avenue for nearly 66 years. Having outgrown the facilities at Lee Avenue, the current members of the corps “reached for the sky” and built a new facility to house its ambulances, provide adequate operations space and help serve the community

On Saturday, September 15 we held our new building dedication with an open house and the burial of a time capsule. We also held a wet-down for our newest rig 61B4 – thanks to the help of local fire departments. Unfortunately we had to wait for our Certificate of Occupancy in order to operate out of the new building on a full-time basis.

In the meanwhile our youth squad was very active and participating in county and state-wide drills. They brought home more trophies! They also attended and took training at Pulse Check 2012 which took place this year in Suffern.

We hosted our annual Halloween Haunted House at our old building on Saturday, October 27; the 2nd day scheduled for Sunday, October 28 was postponed due to the impending Superstprm Sandy hitting the area. We moved our rigs into the new building immediately after closing the Haunted House that Saturday night.

The Town of Stony Point asked us to act as a temporary evacuation shelter and we began receiving evacuees on Sunday evening less than 24-hours after moving our operations to the new building. Our evacuees and several of our own members took shelter in the building and rode out Superstorm Sandy together. It was an exciting and fulfilling week and we met a lot of our neighbors. (Read Tom Ossa’a blog about Hurricane Sandy and our shelter)

By the way, we did hold a Halloween Re-Do on Saturday, Nov. 10th and Sunday Nov. 11th – many of the families that came to partake said it was  terrific because the kids didn’t get to celebrate Halloween properly due to the storm. We were glad to be there for them.

Our mission statement reads, “The purpose and function of this organization is to provide a 24 hour community ambulance service to the residents, visitors and transients in the Town of Stony Point, New York.”

We need YOU. We need EMTs and drivers to help answer the call for help. All training is supplied by the corps, county and state. And we only ask for a minimum of 12 hours per month – It’s not a lot of time, but it is enough time to save a life. Please join us and be a part of something bigger. Download an application here and get started.

We Are Volunteer Professionals

10/24/2012

Volunteer, verb – To choose to act in recognition of a need, with an attitude of social responsibility and without concern for monetary profit, going beyond one’s basic obligations. (from By the People: A History of Americans as Volunteers by Susan J. Ellis and Katherine H. Campbell)

Stony Point Ambulance Corps is proud of the caliber of professionalism among our members. Our members includes career EMS professionals, medical professionals, teachers, journalists, artists, Human Resource professionals, IT technicians, business consultants, military personnel, small business owners, bookkeepers and more.

Our dedicated Board of Directors utilizes their professional skills and continually updates their education in order to bring the best possible leadership to our administration. Our line officers are professionals in the field of EMS and maintain contact with state and regional authorities to remain updated on rules and regulations.

Many of our volunteers are also local Stony Point residents – so we share in the same hopes, dreams and concerns as our neighbors.

We would love for you to join us and add your talent to our team.

The Future Home of Stony Point Ambulance Corps

02/16/2012

It’s progressing nicely, and we are so excited…

If you’ve driven down Route 9W lately, you’ve seen great progress on our new headquarters.

What this means for US – ALL of the residents of Stony Point – is an ambulance corps that will be able to continue to meet the needs of our growing town.

Our present building on Lee Avenue, behind the Rose Memorial Library, has served us well since 1946 when it was just one small bay. Along the line a larger 2-rig bay was built on and eventually the small bay was no longer use-able in size for any of our rigs. For the past several months we have had to park 2 of our trucks outside, even in the cold weather.

Our new building will feature four bays, two meeting rooms, a crew room, crew sleeping quarters and offices. We also have plans for living space for a few ambulance corps members who will help ensure prompt and reliable EMS response when a resident calls for help.

The meeting rooms will allow us to offer more outreach programs for our community such as CPR, First Aid classes and more. Our current crowded building did not always allow the space to provide this while conducting normal operations. Of course we plan to continue the highly successful annual Haunted House event, too, and other great events.

Many of our members are residents of Stony Point as well and take personal pride in what this new facility means to our town. All of our members care deeply about our North Rockland community.

We would love for you to be a part of this exciting time and join our volunteers. We need members who will ride our trucks and respond to medical emergencies – all training will be provided. We also have an active and vital (non-riding) Auxiliary that supports our operations; this co-ed group serves on committees, assists with fundraising, helps with clerical work, and offers manpower for many events and activities. Our Youth Squad is filled with enthusiastic 14 to 18 year old teens, several of whom have trained to ride our trucks and respond as part of an emergency crew; our “kids” learn and participate in drills and have numerous trophies and awards to show. All adult members must be at least 18.

We would love for you to join us - just click here to download and print a member application. (it’s in .pdf format)

*You do NOT have to be a resident of Stony Point to join – but we  encourage you to contact your local ambulance corps as well.
